Sekumpulan kartunis dengan diketuai oleh Zunar telah menubuhkan  gerakan bernama “Cartoonists Against Election Fraud (CAEF) Malaysia” atau Kartunis Lawan Penipuan Pilihanraya.

Matlamat CAEF adalah memberi tekanan kepada pihak berkuasa supaya tidak mengiktiraf keputusan Pilihanraya Umum ke-13 dan sebuah pilihanraya diadakan semula dengan pemantauan oleh badan berwibawa seperti Pertubuhan Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu.

Antara ahli KKI ialah Nor Azlin Ngah (Jonos), Johnny Ong, Amir Hakim (Ahyat), Mohd Afendi Ramli (Ronasina), Haili, Azmie Taha, Lawrence Jeyaraj (Loren), Oly, Abdullah Jones, Amier Hamzah Hashim (Ibnukaduk), Azhar Saad (Art), Azlan Isa (Orang2), Sham Saimun Ezil (Along), Megat, Firdaus dan Baba.

SHOWCASE: Three artists with full-time jobs have pooled some of their best works for an exhibition at Balai Berita.

KUALA LUMPUR: “DON’T stop drawing.”  This was Jamal Tumiran’s advice to aspiring  artists who either shy away from  showcasing their talent or are too busy from doing so.

Jamal and his friends, Zulkifli Yasin and Hishammuddin Salmin, are holding an exhibition at the Balai Berita lobby in Jalan Riong, here.

All of them are not full-time artists.

Jamal is a creative director at an advertising firm, while Zulkifli is a head of department at an architectural consulting firm and Hisham an art director in publishing.

Through Facebook, they plan painting and sketching outings with other artists over the weekends.

Jamal, Zulkifli and Hisham are displaying their artworks in the exhibition called 3.

“The exhibition aims to showcase our talents as working individuals,” said Jamal, who is better known as Jamal Tommy.

“Although we are busy with our jobs, we don’t let our talents go to waste.”

Jamal, who stopped painting for a period of time, became stiff at it when he picked up the brush again. Watercolour is his favourite medium because to him, the paints come alive when they are added with water.

“You just layer the watercolour onto the paper and the drawing just ‘takes over’ automatically,” he said.

Hisham said that through Facebook, he met many young people who liked to paint.

“But they were afraid of painting. We have to start somewhere and although we’re no experts, we tried to teach newcomers some techniques.

“We also learn from younger painters because different people have different styles and preferences,” he said.

The group often have plein air sessions at popular tourist spots and the countryside. Plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air”, and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors.

“We can paint by referring to still photographs, but to capture the life of a place into the painting, we must visit the place,” said Hisham.

The three artists wanted to bring back the culture of plein air painting, which was popular in the 1980s.

Zulkifli, who is also known as Abey Zoul, said that watercolour painting should be preserved, especially in the current digital era.

“Watercolour is the hardest media to use. Once you master it, you can easily master painting in other media,” he said.

He added that one could never duplicate a painting.

“Unlike printing, you cannot have two identical paintings. So if you own a piece, you own the only one in the world,” said Zulkifli.

Each of the artists contributed 20 works in the exhibition.

Zulkifli said it was every artist’s dream to be able to paint full time.

“An artist’s success and credibility is judged by the number of exhibitions he has held,” he said.

Zulkifli has been featured in seven group exhibitions, Jamal in six and Hisham in 10.

“To be an established full-time artist takes a long time with many struggles along the way, but nowadays with social networks like Facebook, we can share our artworks with many people instantly and hopefully get recognition,” said Jamal.

“People have even ordered some of our artworks via Facebook. Through the social network, we get to reach out to a larger number of people from all backgrounds,” said Hisham.

Meanwhile, Zulkifli said that the perception in Malaysia was that artwork was always expensive.

“But now, through social networks, we can change that perception,” he said.

The paintings in 3 are priced between RM600 and RM3,300.

The exhibition ends on April 26.
